Motor Vehicle Safety Essay
There are many different types of laws and regulations that control motor vehicle safety. There are laws that are created at every level of government in the United States starting with the federal government all the way down to municipal or city regulations. A licensed driver must be aware of and abide by all of these different laws in order to ensure the safety of not just other drivers on the road but also bike riders and pedestrians that are walking along side of the roads. The federal government has enacted several motor vehicle laws and standards to ensure the safety and health of the population. The first piece of national legislation was signed in 1966 and was called the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. The most influential part of this bill was the creation of National Highway Safety Bureau which is now known as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The sole purpose and responsibility of this bureaucratic entity was to enact laws to protect the population and to prevent deaths and minimize injuries from motor vehicle accidents and malfunctions. The most influential regulation that the NHTSA created was in 1968 when it required automobile workers to install seat belts for all cars. Since then the NHTSA has created a set of conventions that are required with every new vehicle that is manufactured for use in the United States, these are called the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and there are over a hundred different standards. Although the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act is a type of legislative law, the regulations created by the NHTSA are administrative laws because they were created by an administrative agency. All of the fifty states in the U. S. including the state of Nevada have quite a few different laws that regulate motor vehicle safety. However these laws affect the drivers of the vehicles rather than the manufacturers. Some examples of these laws include the Move Over law which necessitates that if you are in an accident or your car breaks down you must make every effort to move your vehicle to the side of the road not just to keep the flow of traffic moving but to ensure the safety of the passengers in the affected vehicles. Other laws include bicycle laws, child safety seats and booster seats, and school bus regulations. For example, when a school bus pulls over to release at least one child, cars must come to a complete stop until they have reached the safety of the sidewalk; this includes cars on the other side of the road headed in the opposite irection. One of the newest laws that has been adopted in just about every state is the probation of the use of cell phones while driving your car, this means texting or talking except with the use of a hands free headset or Bluetooth. This is an example of how social norms and advancements in technology have necessitated changes in the laws. At the local state level in North Las Vegas, Nevada; there are many ordinances that dictate how drivers must behave while on the streets of the city. These include posted speed limits which state how fast a car can go while maintaining safety of the passengers inside, in other vehicles, and any pedestrians or bicycle riders in the vicinity. Another law that was recently enacted protects pedestrians crossing the street, it states that if a pedestrian enters a cross walk, cars traveling in both directions must come to a complete stop and may not proceed until the pedestrian has safely reached the other side of the street and has both feet on the sidewalk. All these laws combined contribute to the health and welfare of the public. Public health isnââ¬â¢t just about medically treating the masses but it is also about keeping the public safe and ensuring there are no deaths or injuries while operating or riding in a vehicle, riding a bicycle, or walking on the street. The government at all levels has an obligation of at least informing the public about how to stay safe when it comes to motor vehicles and to make sure that all proper precautions are taken when operating a motor vehicle. The decrease in motor vehicle fatalities and injuries is proof that these laws and regulations work and will continue to work as long as government keeps them in place. Figure 4-13 in Essentials of Public Health shows that despite the increase of vehicles miles traveled there has been a steady decrease in the amount of deaths cause by motor vehicle accidents. It is in the best interest of the public to keep these laws and to create new ones as times and situations change.

Home base (plate) is a pentagonal rubber slab known as simply home. The playing field is divided into three main sections:(a)à à à The infield, containing the four bases, is for general defensive purposes bounded by the foul lines and within the grass line.(b)à à The outfield is the grassed area beyond the infield grass line between the foul lines, and bounded by a wall or fence.(c)à à à Foul territory is the entire area outside the foul lines.The game is played in nine innings in which each team gets one turn to bat and try to score runs while the other pitches and defends in the field. There were times when I seriously doubted my compatibility to the profession. There were phases in which the monotony and drudge ry of work got the better of me and I seriously thought of quitting. How important are communication skills to be a successful HR Manager? A. Very important. Greek and Norse Mythology Essay Greek mythology and Roman mythology are almost identical. This is an accepted fact, as it is widely known that the Romans stole the Greek myths. However, it is very interesting to note that the mythology of the Vikings (Norse) has many similarities with the Greek myths. These myths are, by no means, identical to the Greek ones (like the Roman ones are), but there are very distinct commonalities between the two. I see two possible reasons for this besides pure coincidence. The first has to do with the fact that Norse myths were codified during the Viking era: 780 1070. This gives the Norsemen many centuries to become exposed to the Greek (or Roman) myths. The Vikings did travel as far east as the Caspian sea, which is further east than both Italy and Greece. The Norse myths were fashioned after the fall of the Roman empire. During the expansion of the Roman empire, the Romans were able to get all the way to Britain, which is farther west than the Scandinavian countries where these myths originated. The Vikings made many expeditions into Britain. So it is a very realistic thought that the Vikings could have been exposed to the stories of the Greek and Roman gods. It is also possible that the Vikings could have extrapolated parts of the Roman stories into their own. The only two existing primary sources of Norse mythology are the Prose (Elder) Edda, and the Poetic (Younger) Edda. These were written about one thousand to eight hundred years ago respectively. The second factor has to do with mythology as an extension of the society that fashions it. I see mythology as an attempt by a people to explain the powerful forces which affect and shape it, that are beyond its control, such as weather, the elements, and nature. I also see gods as being characters that have many similarities with the people within the society. The gods and goddesses are powerful beings capable of super-human powers, but nevertheless are characters fraught with very human frailties and flaws. In this way they created gods that had similarities with the common man in the society. This made the gods more tangible and easier to identify with. I think that this was necessary because they were not yet at the societal maturity level to have a single god on a cosmic plane. Most of the comparisons will be examining the similarities between major Greek and Norse gods, as well as creatures, stories and specific symbols which are featured in the mythologies.

The athletes, however, receive their scholarship and little more. While the prospect of receiving a free college education is something few would complain about, when the issue is more closely examined it becomes evident that it is not enough. The universities are exploiting athletes, and recently the problems that this creates have become more prominent. More and more athletes are now leaving school early to enter the professional leagues and make money. There have also been more reports of violations surrounding university boosters and alumni paying players. Furthermore, athletes have been accused of making deals with gamblers and altering the outcome of games. All of these problems could be minim ized, if not completely eliminated, by adopting a program for compensating student athletes. College athletes are exploited by their schools, which make millions of dollars off of them. This leads to violations, students leaving college early, and student-athletes that cannot even afford to do their laundry. The NCAA and professional leagues can work together to institute a plan to compensate these athletes and remedy all these problems. Student athletes need money just like any other college students, and many of them need it even more. According to Steve Wulf, many college athletes come from disadvantaged backgrounds (94). This means that while the free tuition is nice, they are still going to need money for other expenses that every college student faces. The NCAA finally realized this recently and decided to allow athletes to have a job earning up to $2000 during the school year (Greenlee 63). This, while well intended, is an impossibility for many, if not the majority of college athletes. As Greenlee states, "The hours athletes would spend working at a job are already spoken for" (63). The sport they play is their job; it takes up as much time (likely more) as the normal studentââ¬â¢s job at the cafeteria or student center, yet they do not get paid. The schools have to make up for this by finding some way to compensate these athletes. The main reason behind not giving college athletes some form of compensation is that college athletes must be amateurs and if they are paid they will lose their status as amateurs.

Death of My Father The most significant and life changing experience in my life was when my dad died two years ago. It really awakened me to how the world works and how fragile life is. Later we learned that his heart had stopped while he was driving on the freeway due to an infection in his heart. Therefore his car went out of control when he lost consciousness, and drifted into the oncoming traffic. Unbeknownst to my mom and me, we went home and I went to my friend Land's house, who lived downstairs in the condo complex that we lived in at the time. We spent the entire afternoon together and surprisingly my mom didn't even call me up for dinner, so I stayed with them and we had a barbecue. I remember sitting on the bench eating a grilled Portobello mushroom, relaxing with Land and his parents, and thinking how great life was. After dinner Land's mom went off somewhere, I wasn't sure where, but I just figured she went for a Pepsi run as usual. I stayed and listened to music while Land worked on his guitar. Then I got the expected call to go back upstairs. So I said goodnight and went on my way. My mom sounded lost and very calm on the phone, not her usual happy self. Wondering what was happening I slowly opened the door to see my mom and Land's mom, Carol, sitting together on the blue and white couches. My mom asked me to sit down, so I sat between them while my mother began to explain how my dad had been in a car accident earlier that afternoon. "His car veered into the oncoming traffic and was hit from the side...he didn't survive." I remember at that moment Carol clenching my shoulder so much it hurt, but I was numb to the pain, we all were. I didn't cry. None of us did. We were unable to comprehend how this could possibly be true. My dad had gone to work that morning seemingly fine.
